Summer Blog Challenge - What Did You Want to Be?

June 22nd - When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

For as long as I can remember,
I wanted to be a teacher.
I cannot recall ever wanting to be anything else.
Actually, that's not quite true.

In high school,
I was chatting with some mates
about what we dreamt we'd do with our lives.
I wanted to be a preschool teacher.
I thought it would be awesome
to own my own preschool.
One mate thought that was a dumb idea.
And so I began thinking it was dumb.

I knew I liked kids,
and wanted to have an impact on them,
so I began thinking of going into social work.
I spent a day at Children's Aid
and decided I didn't care how lame preschool teacher sounded,
it's what I wanted to do.

I've never regretted my decision to get into teaching.
In fact, with moving around for Scott's job,
teaching is the best for me,
as I can follow him and find work.
However,
today I was made to feel small.
A colleague of mine,
who shall be teaching preschool next year,
walked in on a conversation between two other colleagues.
One of them was saying how
her daughter was thinking of becoming a preschool teacher,
and this colleague was disappointed
as she's a straight A student
and she'd hate to see her daughter waste her life.

Well....
I'm glad I was a straight C student
otherwise I'd have wasted my life!

Asides from that,
I'm glad I did what I always wanted to do.
It's incredibly rewarding.

In my opinion, everyone who works with children is valuable and making a positive difference.

From early childhood teachers to college professors - all have a role in helping shape lives. Think of all the little ones you've been able to affect and provide a good foundation for their life. Very few people can say that.

Be proud of how you've invested your time in improving children's lives, teach them things that they need to learn to function and be successful in life, and give them memories that they will look back upon fondly.

I'd say you have FAR from wasted your life. You have used it to impact the next generation and many generations to come.

Being a teach is one of the most important jobs out there. YOU get to shape little minds. I too was once a preschool teacher, and for what ever reason, people assumed you needed no education to do it. WRONG. I LOVED my preschool classroom and had tons of fun.

Ohhhhhh, honey. I was a preschool teacher for two years before I decided I couldn't handle it. The teaching was amazing, but I had *nothing* left in me for my own daughter by the time I came home. You are truly amazing for sticking to your guns!! ♥ ♥

I think it is wonderful that you followed your dream. You know how I feel about dedicated teachers and pre school is just as important as any of the grades. If a child is fortunate enough to have a really good pre school teacher, it will establish them for the rest of their schooling. A good start is what everyone can use. When I went to school, we didn't have pre school, but I was VERY fortunate in having a terrific first grade teacher and she made learning fun and truly set me on the right path.

Will you keep on teaching pre school when you get your Masters?

I wanted to be a doctor, then a teacher, and sometimes I thought it might be cool to be a writer.

Glad you followed you dream!

=)

PS. I did become a teacher but ended up not enjoying the job!
